Hi all

I'm at a loss as to what to do with my Y reg Galaxy TDI. For a few months now it's been overheating when I go at higher speeds. Locally for short trips at 30/40mph never goes above 90, but for longer and faster trips it goes up and have to slow down and stop.

Had the radiator replaced - no change.

Had the water pump replaced - had those broken off plastic impeller blades.

Seems to be worse now - before I had these two things done I could go 200 miles at 50mph without a problem with the heater on full blast, but now the heater just blows cold. I took the expansion cap off after not using it for a couple of days and the coolant just gushed out as if it was under pressure - is that normal?

My garage doesn't know what to do next which is good in at least he's not asking for more money, but I don't know what to do.

Can anybody suggest what I tell them to do? I don't really have the tools and stuff to do much myself.

Or can anybody recommend a garage who's sorted out a problem like this - I live in south Manchester?

thanks all

You have an airlock - search the forum on how to fill the cooling system properly. Edited by seatkid

I was going to agree with seatkid re refilling your cooling system again BUT

having read your post a couple of times I take it the car had been overheating for a while ( "a few months") and as you say rad changed no different, re the water pump change did it actually have broken impellors - I would class this as important as depending on how long you have been driving it for in this state (without realising) coupled with the heater blowing cold air after these repairs could also indicate a possible internal combustion leak (head gkt, cracked head ect)

I think the best action you could take now would be to get the cooling system tested properly and ask the garage to do a sniffer test aswell which would help to diagnose your fault properly. If you are in the AA or RAC you could call them to check it depending on the patrol you get they might do it properly

re a good garage in the south manchester, where abouts are you.

You have an airlock......and that is the evidence

Thanks seatkid. I wondered if it was an airlock but I didn't know if the system was always that pressurised. But I've searched the forum and can't find a definitive way on draining / refilling.

I've looked under engine and here is a hose about an inch diameter going to the bottom of the radiator at the right hand side. Is that the one? I've made a fool of myself before taking off some big hoses that I thought were going to the radiator and they were the intercooler or something.

And then I've seen something about draining the rear heater matrix by taking off the rubber hoses to that under the near side rear door.

If I take those off is that the way to drain, then put them back on and refill through expansion tank. Is there more to it than that?

I can't get a Haynes manual for this one so struggling, normally able to muddle through with one of those.

Guess this is the first thing to do but if the head gasket was blown would this do the same thing? I read somewhere that if the head gasket was blown some hoses would be hard not soft, but is that right? How do I know which ones to check?

thanks for the help

ah, that's bad is it? Had it running OK for a few years now. Apart from strangeness when accelerating sometimes when it seems to have no power. Which sorts itself out when it's turned off and on again.

Well I used to own a Ford Galaxy that had over heating issues, but it wasn't Y587, it was Y58 SU...... I had to get rid of it as the overheating issues just couldn't be solved, even after a new radiator, new pipes, new water pump, new header tank and cap etc etc, I think in the end it must have been a cracked head, maybe a hairline fracture, as the water level in the header tank was always in need of filling, but there was no obvious leak anywhere. I eventually traded it in, the garage knew the problem and said they would fix it before selling it on. The Galaxy was remapped professionally for a while, but then started overheating, so I had the remap put back to the original Ford factory settings, but it still overheated, so it was sold with the original Ford spec mapping. I was sad to see it go, infact I even tried to find where it had gone after I bought a car (Laguna!) which was awful, I owned it for 3 weeks and sold it to buy an ST220 Mondeo, which was fab but couldn't afford to run it, so sold it, and bought a Galaxy from auction which I still have now and its superb. Soooo to cut a long story short I don't think we're talking about the same Galaxy that I traded a couple of years ago !

Well, a used car is a used car and you take the risks when buying !
